Full disclosure up front: this guide lives on HiveJournal, and one of the picks is ours — it's labeled. The rest are genuine recommendations: every app below is the honest best answer for somebody, and we link each one's own site so you can check us. Most habit trackers do one thing — count streaks. We think the thing worth looking for is whether it helps you decide, not just tally.
Free; optional subscription ~$4.99/mo (or less annually) for cosmetic + convenience perks · iOS · Android · web
Turn your habits into an RPG — earn gold, level an avatar, fight bosses with a party of friends. If the game framing clicks for you, nothing else motivates quite like it, and the core is free and open-source. If it doesn't click, there isn't much underneath the game.
One-time ~$4.99 (no subscription) · iOS · iPadOS · Apple Watch (Apple-only)
An Apple Design Award for a reason — a gorgeous, effortless grid of habits with deep Apple Health integration, bought once with no subscription. The trade-off: Apple-only, and it's a pure streak grid with nothing beneath it.
Free (limited); Premium ~$4.99/mo, ~$29.99/yr, or a lifetime option · iOS · Android · macOS · web
Minimal, well-designed, and everywhere — iOS, Android, macOS, web — with solid charts and a lifetime-license option. The free tier caps your habits; the useful version is paid, and it stays a tracker and nothing more.
Free, open-source, no ads, no accounts · Android only
Completely free, private, ad-free, and open-source, with a forgiving "habit strength" score instead of brittle streaks. Android-only and deliberately minimal — but a genuine community favorite for good reason.
Free trial; subscription (~$79.99/yr range) · iOS (Android waitlisted historically)
The official app from James Clear — identity-based design, the two-minute rule, and reflective check-ins straight from the book. Subscription-priced and iOS-first, and still fundamentally a tracker with prompts.
One-time purchase (~$5.99 on iOS; Mac sold separately) — no subscription · Apple only (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Vision Pro)
A beautiful Apple-only app whose best idea is anchoring habits to your calendar — "stretch after standup" shows up where your day already is. It bundles tasks, a Pomodoro timer, countdowns, and focus soundscapes, so it can replace a few apps. Apple-only, and it organizes more than it changes behavior — no context nudges, no when-to-skip.
Free trial; Premium ~$39.99–$49.99/yr (monthly/quarterly/lifetime options) · iOS · Android
A wellness coach in app form — Duke-behavioral-science-backed "journeys" that layer in habits (sleep, focus, mindfulness) one small morning action at a time, with audio and live coaching. It's a program you follow rather than a tracker you drive, and the good parts are behind a ~$40/yr subscription.
Free for ~3 habits; Premium ~$4.99/mo, with a one-time unlock option · iOS · Android
The classic color-coded chain tracker — green/yes, red/no, yellow/skip — with serious trend charts, per-habit journal notes, CSV/JSON export, and a real knack for tracking habits you want to stop. A data lover's logger; no nudges or decision help beyond the charts.
Free tier (limited); one-time unlock, no subscription · iOS · Android
A beautiful, minimal tracker whose signature is a GitHub-style tile grid of your streaks — cross-platform, privacy-focused, one-time unlock, built by a solo dev with a 4.86★ following. Deliberately just a lovely tracker: no nudges, no decision help.
Free; Plus ~$9.99/mo · iOS · Android
A self-care pet you nurture by doing your own small habits — gentle, warm, and beloved by people who bounce off guilt-driven streak apps. It's wellness-and-mood-first, not a rigorous tracker, but for the right person that's exactly the point.
Free core · ~$5/mo unlocks premium across the whole platform · Web (any device) · smart glasses · native mobile in progress
Ours — so weigh this accordingly. From the original habit-tracker pioneer (2009). The streaks and routines are here, but the point is the whole loop the others skip: it nudges you at the real moment (even spoken in your own voice, on smart glasses), it does the half no streak app has — tells you what a choice will cost you hours out and gives you permission to let the right things drift — and it shows which actions actually move your energy, mood, and sleep. Honest gaps: newly relaunched, no native mobile habit app in the stores yet (web + glasses today), and the pieces are still being unified into one cockpit.
Finch is deliberately a self-care companion rather than a rigorous tracker, so the matrix covers the ten head-to-head apps (scroll it sideways). ★ marks things only HabitForge does.
