EmberKiln — indie-author GTM ("give your book a second life")
Go-to-market thesis for reaching self-published authors with low/no sales and converting them into EmberKiln creators. Pairs with the conference plan (EMBERKILN_CONFERENCES.md — Author Nation is the flagship channel) and the brand (EMBERKILN_NAME_CLEARANCE.md).
The opportunity
The pool is one of the largest in publishing:
- KDP ingests on the order of 1–4M new titles/year; Bowker counted ~2.3M+ self-published ISBNs in 2021 alone (most KDP e-books skip ISBNs, so the real number is higher).
- The distribution is brutally long-tailed: the median self-published title sells well under 100 lifetime copies; a huge fraction sell single digits or zero. "Average ~250" is a mean dragged up by a tiny head.
- So there are millions of finished books with near-zero traction — and a finished manuscript is exactly EmberKiln's raw material.
⚠️ Numbers above are directional from public industry reporting; pull cited, current figures via a deep-research scan before putting them in a deck.
Why they're a fit
Their real problem isn't "marketing" in the abstract — it's no discovery surfaces. A text-only book on page 40 of a category is invisible. EmberKiln hands them new surfaces from the book they already wrote:
- Audiobook — a growing format with far less competition than e-books; a second storefront (Audible/ACX).
- Short-film / scene clips — short video (TikTok/Reels/YouTube) is the actual discovery engine; a 30-sec animated scene is something they can't make themselves.
- Paperback + screenplay — "your book as a physical object / as a film" is an emotional, shareable hook.
The pitch is not "we'll boost your sales" (vague, unprovable). It's "we turn your existing book into things you can post and hold" — concrete artifacts they own.
The landmines (do not ignore)
- This is exactly the scammer pitch. Vanity presses + fake-review mills have spent a decade emailing low-sales authors promising "visibility." The segment is burned and skeptical. Differentiate by leading with a real artifact, never a promise.
- Cold-scraping author emails is a legal + deliverability minefield — CAN-SPAM/GDPR, Amazon ToS prohibits scraping, and it torches your sending domain. Do not build the GTM on cold outbound.
- Zero-sales often means zero-budget + low quality. The best targets aren't the deadest tail — they're aspiring/mid-list authors with a finished, decent book who want more reach. Some signal (engaged-ish following, genre fit, real cover) predicts willingness to pay and to share.
The model that works: inbound + community, free-sample-first
Flip from cold-outbound to inbound + community, with a value-first artifact as the hook:
- Flagship channel — Author Nation (Las Vegas, Nov 10–13 2026; $450 vendor table). 1,400 working indie authors, opt-in, in person. That room is this audience. See the conference doc.
- Communities — r/selfpublish, KBoards, 20Books/Author Nation FB groups, Goodreads authors. Value-first presence, not blasts.
- The hook — a free-sample funnel. "Give your book a second life": upload a manuscript → get a narrated sample chapter + one short scene clip back, free. They see it's real, then convert to a paid production.
- Proof — the "Made with EmberKiln" showcase + the per-work badge already shipped. Real books that became every form.
Funnel
Author Nation booth / community → free sample (chapter audio + 1 scene clip)
→ "see your whole book like this" → paid production (audiobook / scenes /
paperback) → Made-with-EmberKiln showcase + badge → word of mouth
Instrument it end-to-end (the EmberKiln funnel events already exist for the landing→studio→order path; extend for the author-trial path).
Open questions to resolve before scaling
- Trademark clearance on "EmberKiln" (gating a big public push — see the clearance brief).
- Pricing/packaging for the author trial → paid conversion.
- Self-serve onboarding readiness (studio is closed beta today).
- Whether to pull cited market figures via deep-research before building a deck.
