About That — is a WordPress plugin worth it? (channel research)
Researched 2026-07-16 (web research, wp.org data + policy pages). Verdict: not now — do the zero-cost WPCode docs play instead; revisit on demonstrated WP demand. Product doc: ABOUT_THAT.md.
The category is small on the directory
| Plugin | Active installs | Capability |
|---|---|---|
| ResponsiveVoice TTS | 7,000+ | verbatim read-aloud |
| GSpeech | 3,000+ | verbatim TTS (their cloud) |
| Trinity Audio | 2,000+ | verbatim + paid-tier AI summaries |
| BeyondWords | 800+ (VC-backed, years in) | verbatim + podcast feeds |
| Play.ht | closed 2024 (security issue; ~8k peak) | — |
| Post2Podcast | <10 | the only two-speaker AI-dialogue plugin |
| ElevenLabs | no plugin at all — docs tell users to paste the embed via WPCode | — |
The whole page-audio category sums to ~13–15k installs while mainstream WP niches run 100k–5M+. The 2025–26 directory search algorithm buries newcomers (weights historical installs), and the closest analog to our format (Post2Podcast, conversational two-speaker) has effectively zero organic pickup.
What IS validated
WordPress.com shipped a native two-host "posts → AI podcast" feature (May 2026) — WordPress.com-hosted only, not self-hosted — so conversational page-audio is market-validated and the self-hosted lane is open. Nobody anywhere does the pitch-panel format.
Policy (for when we do build it)
SaaS-backed plugins requiring an account are explicitly allowed (Guideline 6; consent pattern per Guideline 7 = enter embed ID in settings). Plugin wrapper code must be GPL. Listing needs readme.txt, SVN, 2FA, and passing the mandatory Plugin Check tool; review queue is currently days-to-weeks. Effort: ~1 focused week to first listing + a permanent maintenance tax ("Tested up to" bumps ~3×/yr, support forum, security responsibility — a security lapse is what killed Play.ht).
The plan
- Now ($0): copy ElevenLabs' play — a docs section / landing FAQ: "Install About That on WordPress in 2 minutes with WPCode." Captures WP users with zero maintenance surface and measures WP demand.
- Revisit triggers: (a) meaningful share of embed signups are WP sites asking for a plugin; (b) we want a Featured Plugins Experiment lottery ticket (hand-picked biweekly dashboard exposure, reported 20× install jumps — plugin must exist first); (c) we start SEO on "WordPress AI audio player" terms where the listing is a credibility/backlink asset.
- When triggered, the build is small (settings page + script injection) and policy-safe.
