One roll. One story.

A song, a setting, a character, a motif, an object — one bento box of constraints to start from. Roll until you find one you can't stop thinking about.

How to use this

  • The song is the soundtrack — the tone the piece should feel like, not necessarily a literal scene.
  • The setting + character + motif + object are constraints. Use all of them, but you don't have to use them literally.
  • Aim for 500–1,500 words. Time-box yourself: 25 minutes, no editing, just write.
  • Want to compete? The weekly contest gives every writer the same bento and pays the winner.

Why a bento?

A bento box is divided. Compartments. Each piece distinct, but together they make a whole meal. Same idea here: each constraint is its own thing, but the story you write is what holds them together. Constraints don't limit creativity — they give it something to push against.
