Light in the House
from a journal
Three in the morning, walking the halls Thoughts like a fire, too big for these walls Gulf-wide and breaking, the distance from you I wanted the coffee, I wanted sleep too Said it out loud like a prayer in the dark "I love you, I love you"—a trembling spark Candle inside me, your love burning bright But the flames came back when I turned off the light Then I remembered—I found it at last My own voice, steady, stronger than fast Reminding me gently of all I can hold All of the power, all of the control Two minutes of listening, breathing so slow Smile on my face and I finally let go The house isn't burning, the fire was me And I found my own voice—and it set me free
