Augment your cloud skills in 2012

With the use of cloud computing expanding and the demand for information technology (IT) workers with cloud skills growing, CompTIA, the non-profit trade association for the IT industry, has introduced a new specialty certification focused on cloud computing knowledge.

CompTIA announced today that the first CompTIA Approved Quality Content e-learning course for CompTIA Cloud Essentials is now available from ITpreneurs. Additional training materials are due in Q1 2012 from Element K.

CompTIA Cloud Essentials covers a range of cloud computing principles and concepts – from both the business and technical perspectives – and what’s involved in moving to and governing the cloud. The specialty certification was developed in cooperation with ITpreneurs, a leading provider of competence development solutions for IT best practices.
Momentum behind the move to cloud computing continues to accelerate. More than half (56 percent) of the organizations surveyed for CompTIA’s August 2011 Second Annual Trends in Cloud Computing study said their investment in cloud computing will increase by 10 percent or more over the next 12 months.

“As use of the cloud expands, the demand for IT workers with cloud computing knowledge grows as well,” Terry Erdle, executive vice president, skills certification, CompTIA, said. “CompTIA Cloud Essentials is designed to bolster the cloud computing credentials of the IT workforce.”

According to the job listing aggregator Indeed, in early December there were some 10,000-plus job openings that specifically mentioned cloud computing.

“There are many more jobs that may not specifically mention cloud computing, but are directly tied to the cloud,” Erdle noted. “These include jobs in a data center, which is the back end for anything involving cloud computing. Database management, network management, systems administration and integration and many other IT positions also have a cloud component. Individuals in these job roles and scores of others are candidates for CompTIA Cloud Essentials.”

Content of the CompTIA Cloud Essentials exam is based on consultation and insights from leading subject matter experts and organizations in the cloud computing market, including Amazon, Cisco, Citrix, EMC, Google, HP, IBM, Microsoft, Rackspace and VMware. Areas covered in the exam include:

  • Configuration of networks, including archive, backup, and restoration technologies
  • Business continuity and storage administration
  • System integration and application workload
  • Basic troubleshooting and connectivity

Mobile payments are the future

It’s hard to put a price tag on security and privacy, but a recent study of consumers’ online and mobile purchasing attitudes conducted by Javelin Strategy & Research and PaymentOne (www.paymentone.com) found 4 out of 5 consumers would spend more online if offered an easier and more secure way to pay. The survey also found that by a margin of almost 4 to 1, consumers believe direct carrier-billed mobile payments are more secure than using credit and debit cards for online digital purchases.

How much more would consumers spend if they didn’t have to share their sensitive personal data or type in a long credit card number to complete their purchase? The Javelin survey finds that online merchants could add aggregated yearly revenue of $109.8 billion, simply by offering an alternative “no-credit-card-required” way to pay at checkout.

Conducted this fall, the 2011 Consumer Payment Poll revealed that consumers have dramatic and growing concerns about the safety and privacy of using credit or debit cards for online transactions. More than half of consumers surveyed admitted to abandoning online purchases at check-out because of these concerns, confirming a huge loss in potential revenue for online merchants.

Majority of consumers would buy more if online payments were safer

4 out of 5 consumers polled would spend more online if given an easier and more secure payment alternative to credit or debit cards. This indication of pent-up demand and lost opportunity for commerce was consistently high across a wide range of segments such as age, ethnicity, income, geography, early/late adopters of technology and gender, with certain demographics, including higher income, younger and minority segments displaying an even higher demand for easier and safer payment alternatives. Nearly 6 in 10 consumers are more likely to visit and buy from sites that offer “no-credit-card-required” payment options. Survey results further indicated that digital merchants could realize incremental average monthly revenue of $89 per consumer simply by increasing the available payment choices.

“According to the 2011 Online Payment Poll, consumers are concerned about the use of credit cards online and related issues of privacy, fraud, security and convenience,” said Phil Blank, Managing Director at Javelin Strategy & Research. “If digital merchants simply offered consumers an alternative way to pay, such as mobile carrier-based payments, 79 percent of decisive consumers indicated they would spend more, driving significant new incremental revenue from subscriptions, transactions and purchases. With an estimated $110 billion in new revenue for digital merchants being left on the table each year in the U.S. alone, this ‘commerce gap’ represents a massive untapped opportunity.”

Consumers are afraid to use their credit cards online

Survey respondents voiced extreme concerns around using credit cards to shop online, especially for smaller digital purchases. Privacy and security topped shoppers’ concerns listed below:

  • I’m concerned a merchant or website will start sending me junk mail (55 percent)
  • I’m concerned my personal information will be sold to other merchants (54 percent)
  • I’m concerned my credit card information will be intercepted (51 percent)
  • I’m concerned unauthorized parties will access my personal information stored by merchant (51 percent)
  • I’m concerned my credit card information will be misused by merchants (41 percent)
  • I don’t like the idea of providing private or personal financial information (38 percent)
  • I worry that my personal financial information could be intercepted over the air when I enter it using my phone (32 percent)

Shoppers’ security and privacy concerns were universal across all age groups and income ranges, indicating that the vast majority of online consumers, regardless of their socio-demographic status, would be inclined to purchase more online if their security and privacy concerns were addressed with “no-credit-card-required” safer and more secure billing options.

“Consumers’ concerns around the security and privacy of online payment transactions are staring digital merchants in the face and demanding attention,” said Brad Singer, executive vice president, PaymentOne. “In today’s economy where every cent counts and every customer is vital to the success of a business, merchants clearly need to do more to ensure customers aren’t scared away when it comes time to check out. The implementation of new consumer-friendly alternative payment options may well be the single most important step merchants and publishers can take to grow their customer bases and their revenues.”

Carrier-billed mobile transactions top alternative payment options

300 percent more survey respondents perceived carrier-billed mobile transactions, where financial information is never shared or loaded onto the phone, to be safer than “mobile payments” requiring consumers to input credit or debit card info. Consumers identified the wireless bill as the preferred method (58 percent), followed by the landline/broadband bill (22 percent) as the safest and most secure alternatives for digital purchases. The survey found strong interest for safer payment methods across all socio-economic strata, but the interest is greatest within households earning greater than $75,000 per year.

Mobile payments are the future

95 percent of survey respondents have mobile phones, yet just 36 percent have already used them to make a payment. The 2011 Online Payment Poll finds strong interest for using a mobile phone for payments beyond subscriptions, service bills and mobile apps. Among consumers who have used their mobile devices to make payments, nearly one in four have purchased digital entertainment; one in three purchased entertainment tickets; and approximately one in four purchased travel and apparel. Merchants deploying additional payment options, including mobile payment options that enjoy strong consumer interest, can reach and convert more potential consumers and capture millions of dollars in additional revenue.

About this survey

Commissioned by PaymentOne, the poll results were published by Javelin Strategy & Research in December 2011. Conducted in September 2011, the poll surveyed over 2,000 U.S. consumers regarding their online payment preferences for digital content and services. Games, mobile apps, music, streaming media and entertainment, software, security services (e.g., antivirus and anti-spam), subscriptions, Internet services (e.g., Wi-Fi), console games, and related premium services were among the top categories consumers were interested in purchasing.

AOL today revealed the top Web searches in a variety of categories including news, celebrities, memes, tech gadgets, movies and TV shows. Demonstrating its understanding of the conversations resonating with consumers, AOL also gathered data on new question-based categories that speak to the phrases most popular in online searches.

“AOL is one of the starting points for conversations on the Web and this year’s search results reflect that,” said Francis Lobo, Senior Vice President, AOL Search. “Using our data and insights tools, we captured the pulse of the 2011 online dialogue – from Casey Anthony and Charlie Sheen, to Ted Williams and Lady Gaga, our search results reveal the news, entertainment and pop culture memes that captivated consumers this year.”

Fueled by the controversy surrounding her trial, Casey Anthony emerged as the top searched terms, followed by the Gabrielle Giffords shooting and the Royal Wedding. Charlie Sheen’s antics propelled him to the top of the celebrities list, with Justin Bieber and Kate Middleton rounding out the top three most searched celebrities.

AOL gathered new category data this year to offer insight into the most popular questions consumers searched. In the “how” category searchers most often inquired, “How can I pay off my credit card?”; in the “why did” category searchers asked, “Why Did Dick leave Big Brother?”; and in the “is” category, “Is Whitney Houston pregnant?” topped the list.

1. Create A Customized Welcome Page – Creating a Customized Welcome Page is an excellent way to increase your number of fans. Statistics show that it will help you turn 72% of your visitors into fans.

To create a custom page, you can use the Facebook application, Static HTML iframe tabs.

If you’re not familiar with HTML code, then you can go to Pagemodo.com. Pagemodo is free, and they have ready-made templates that you can use. So, all you have to do is just pick a template.

There’s also a website, Woobox.com, where you can add sweepstakes, coupons, and more to your Fan page.

2. Email your current customer list & invite them to your new Fan page – You can send a nice email out to your current list letting them know about your new page, and you could say something like – I would be honored if you would click ‘like’ to become a fan of my new page (and make sure to include a link to your page).

3. Post Links on your Social Media Profiles like Twitter, LinkedIn, & Your Personal Profile on Facebook – For example, in your Bio on your Facebook Personal Profile, you could include something like: Come hang out with me on my Fan page at: facebook.com/______________. In your Twitter or LinkedIn Bio, you could type: Connect with me on FB at: facebook.com/____________.

3 things to do if your identity is breached

IdentityHawk reported 58 publicly known breaches in October compromising 12,279,616 online records. The results are part of the “breached institutions” listing from The IdentityHawk October 2011 Identity Breach Report. A Ponemon Institute Research Report, entitled “State of Web Application Security Survey” (February 2011) reported that 93% of organizations have been hacked at least once in the past two years.

A data breach, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC), is “an event in which an individual’s name plus Social Security Number (SSN), driver’s license number, medical record, or a financial record/credit/debit card is potentially put at risk – either in electronic or paper format.”

According to Jeff Paradise, executive director of IdentityHawk, “Identity theft breaches are often initiated because identity thieves steal thousands of records in batches from major enterprises. In fact, in 2002; former White House Cyber Security Advisor, Richard Clarke warned us. He was quoted as saying to enterprises, ‘If you (enterprises) spend more on coffee than on IT security, you will be hacked. What’s more, you deserve to be hacked’.”

Unfortunately, Paradise continued, “Many organizations, a decade later, are still not spending enough and are not vigilant enough when it comes to protecting enterprise data. Yet, hackers have become more aggressive and sophisticated.”

Added Paradise, “If an enterprise is breached, such as a major e-tailer, consumers need to be aggressive.” Paradise recommends these steps:

1. Immediately see the details of the breach.
2. Determine if you are affiliated with the fraud event.
3. If affiliated with the breach (for example if you bought something from a retailer online or offline using a credit card, your information could have been compromised) IdentityHawk, or others can, guide members through the specific steps needed to take protective measures.

“The most important step is to have early knowledge of a breach and take immediate action,” Paradise concluded.

How to break into the 5.5 billion download Chinese app market

Total mobile application downloads for both smartphones and feature phones in China will reach 5.5 billion next year. “As the app market in the West gets crowded, content providers and developers are eyeing new markets, such as China, which has the world’s largest subscriber base,” says practice director Dan Shey.

Expansion of China’s 3G subscriptions, which are expected to jump from 102 million in 2011 to 540 million in 2016, are driving app download growth. “Feature phones are an important market for app developers, maintaining a large share of the app store user base over the next few years,” says research analyst Fei-Feng Seet. “Regardless of device type, successful apps in the Chinese market are those with a local look and feel and incorporate local content.”

Examples are game apps like PopCap’s “Plants vs. Zombies” and Electronic Arts’ “Need for Speed,” which has instructions in Chinese so users could easily understand the game. Halfbrick Studios launched a tailored version of “Fruit Ninja for China” that includes peaches as a new fruit and has a background image with the 12 Chinese zodiac animals. The localized app was updated five times ahead of the main English app, which was pirated.

App localization can also mean working with local partners such as Renren and Weibo, two Chinese social networking sites. Today, more than 90% of apps offered by China-based app stores are in Chinese and include local content.

5 tips to protect your smartphone from malicious apps

In response to the increasing interest in mobile applications, McAfee is sharing its top five tips to avoid downloading bad apps. While reported mobile malware incidents are still relatively low in number, McAfee Labs is seeing significant growth in the mobile malware threat landscape. Due to the fact that smartphones and tablets have eclipsed unit sales of desktop and laptop PCs, cybercriminals have set their sights on mobile and maliciously modified apps are becoming a more popular vector for infecting devices. Fortunately, there are some common sense practices that anyone can take to help protect their smartphones and tablets from the growing threat of malware and the persistent threat of unsecured devices.

Here are five easy steps device users can take to secure their own devices.

  • For the moment, the amount of detected smartphone malware is relatively low compared to malware that targets desktop or laptop PCs; but being aware that it exists is the first step toward protecting yourself and your data.
  • Research apps and their publishers thoroughly and check the ratings – better to install apps that are broadly used in the market or are recommended by your circle of friends and colleagues.
  • It is wise to purchase from a well-known reputable app store market, such as the Android Market. One way for Android users to avoid installation of non-market applications is to de-select the “Unknown sources” option in the Applications Settings menu on their device. If the option is not listed, it means your mobile service provider has already done this for the user.
  • When you install an app, you’ll see a list of permissions for services that are granted access to the hardware and software components on your device, like contacts, camera and location. If something in the permissions screen doesn’t look right, don’t install that app! For example, a game or alarm clock app probably shouldn’t need to access your contacts or have the ability to transmit that data from your device.
  • Install antivirus software on your phone. It is a good idea to install an antivirus program when you get a new mobile device before you add any other apps.

According to the Gartner report, “Forecast: Mobile Application Stores, Worldwide, 2008-2015,” May 18, 2011 (G00212661), 17.7 billion mobile apps are estimated to be downloaded in 2011 (a 115% increase from 2010). By 2012, mobile apps are projected to generate more than $15 billion in app store revenues from end-users alone.

“As the application market continues to boom, users should be more cautious that they know what they’re installing,” said Lawrence Pingree, Gartner analyst. “For example, they should only install applications from trusted sources and ensure that permissions match up with the respective application’s core features. Anti-malware protection will also go a long way in helping to ensure the user’s mobile device has the latest protection.”

“Maliciously modified apps have started to become more prevalent,” said Vincent Weafer, senior vice president, McAfee Labs. “Based on McAfee detections, we’ve seen approximately 200 malicious apps versus tens of thousands of good apps. However, with mobile devices becoming a targeted platform for malware, it’s becoming more common for cybercriminals to attempt to corrupt a legitimate app. The best advice for users is to be careful, protect the mobile device and the mobile apps that reside on the device.”
