2011 Is Year of Enterprise Mobile Apps

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011 by jrajani

A new survey by Kelton research found that 1 in 2 IT managers plan on implementing and managing mobile applications using hosted and on location mobility solutions backed by a solid mobile enterprise application platform. Businesses in the IT services sector should consider mobile as a key part of revenue growth for 2011.

Here are some key findings from the survey:

A majority (82%) of IT managers share the belief that it would be beneficial – not detrimental – to host more of their mobile applications in the cloud.

9 in 10 (90 percent) IT managers reported they will implement new mobile applications this year, with almost a quarter (21%) looking to introduce 20 or more applications into their organization. In addition, they anticipate supporting about 8 different mobile platforms or operating systems by the end of 2011.

Despite the enthusiasm and flexibility shared by IT departments, many are currently not being strategic about mobility. Almost half of respondents (46%) who do not have a mobile strategy in place did not expect to hire staff to specifically deal with their enterprise mobility strategy while nearly the same number of respondents (45%) admitted they did not have a plan or timeline in place.

45% percent of respondents predict that implementing or managing the onslaught of mobile enterprise applications tops the priority list in the coming year, even over more common issues such as adhering to IT budgets. Also, 56% of IT managers consider customizing company information for mobile purposes a crucial part of conducting business and not just a “nice to have.” In addition, more than eight in ten (84 percent) of those who feel this way work for companies that are flexible about the use of new mobile applications or devices.

Similarly, IT managers report that possible data security issues with mobile applications cause more problems (65%) than implementation (25%) or employee adoption hurdles (10%).

1 in 2 respondents (50%) say that employee demand is driving the adoption of new mobile applications.

In fact, almost 3 in 4 (73%) say that decision makers are flexible and not rigid about incorporating new mobile applications and mobile devices into their organization, showing that many mid-to-large sized companies are committed to mobilizing the enterprise.
“The proliferation of new devices, coupled with the vast expansion of mobile applications used by consumers has paved the road for mobility solutions to enter the enterprise at the worker, workgroup, and workflow levels. Given all this, we expect 2011 to be the year of the transformation of the enterprise,” said Dan Ortega, senior director product marketing, Sybase. “As evidenced by this survey, IT managers will be faced with greater complexities and requirements across the entire enterprise mobility framework, which is where a leading mobile solutions provider like Sybase can take an entire industry to the next level.”

Having Trouble With Potty Training? There’s an App for that

Friday, August 20th, 2010 by jrajani

Tech-savvy parents who use iPhones now have a new tool to help tackle potty training – the iGo Potty app. Developed by the Kimberly-Clark Pull-Ups brand, iGo Potty is the world’s first branded potty training app, from the leaders in training pants, designed to help parents keep kids engaged and on track toward success. The new app is now available for free in the iTunes App Store.

Tech oriented parents now have an app they can use for potty training called “iGo Potty”. The app is being made available in the iTunes App store and is developed by the Kimberly-Clark Pull-Ups brand. “We know no two kids train alike and every parent needs to develop their own teaching style to fit their lifestyle,” said Peter Sawin, Kimberly-Clark Pull-Ups brand director. “We developed the iGo Potty app to give parents the flexibility to train their children with a mobile tool that can be customized to motivate each individual child and help make training easier, more fun and less of a burden.”

Parents can download the app and customize it to their life style. Reminders can be setup throughtout the day as potty reminders and a photo or avatar option makes your child feel a personal connection with the training app. “Patty the Potty” calls the phone periodically to remind the child it’s time to try to go.

Digital rewards include sticks and games which can keep the potty training process fun and motivating. Once a set number of successes are achieved the app unlocks additional rewards and games, reports can be generated to keep track of potty success. Once parents feel their child has achieved success with potty training a virtual celebration can be had in the form of graduation theme music, ballons and streamers. Parents can printout a diploma and hang it on the refrigerator for further celebration of a key milestone in their child’s life.

Kimberly-Clark worked with mobile marketing agency Joule to develop the app and you can learn more at facebook.com/pull-ups.

Sexytime in the bedroom? There’s an app for that

Sexy Time App

Sexy Time App

SexyTime Sex Position Guide and Choreographer is a new sex app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch may on the surface seem to be an attempt to make money on sexual curosity, but the app claims to be educational.

“Few adult-themed products improve overall health because consumers are enticed primarily by flashy marketing, not quality. Most products reinforce behaviors in isolation of partners, or worse, are just scams, even in iTunes. Ironically, the people that most need sex coaching are least likely to seek help.” But thanks to low-cost apps on phones worldwide, there’s now a powerful platform for scientists to lend sound, healthy advice to virtually anyone, anywhere. “We’re hoping we’ve designed something enticing, but also educational,” says R. C. Kuhn, Calvert Strategies president and project “Chief Mad Scientist.

The app uses 3D figures to illustrate sexual positions like in the Kama Sutra, adding practical advice on improving execution.

Features include:

Randomizer and Choreographer utilities which allow couples to generate randomized playlists of sexual positions

Calling audibles in (selected) sexy voices to instruct couples when and how to switch positions

A user-specified, sexual playlist generator, which provides bedside sex coaching

Sex advice gleaned from diverse scientific literature

The well-intentioned proof of concept still met enormous challenges from Apple’s review team, precisely while Apple publicly shunned sex apps. And though still banned in China, Calvert Strategies hopes science will eventually overcome. SexyTime sold in 26 countries within four weeks, garnering rave reviews from Thrillist.com, and an “Editor’s Choice” review from AppCraver.com.

The app is now available from the itunes store and priced at $1.99.

What are your thoughts on this app? Will you be purchasing it as a “scientific and educational” experiment? Leave your comments below.
