A recent press release by Consumer Watchdog has pressed Google to do more when it comes to user privacy.
John M. Simpson, consumer advocate with Consumer Watchdog said, “If Google really wanted to give users control over their privacy it would give consumers the ability to be anonymous from the company and its advertisers in crucial areas such as search data and online behavior.” “The Dashboard gives the appearance of control without the actual ability to prevent Google from tracking you and delivering you to its marketers.”
From a usability perspective, the link to find this feature has been buried in the account settings function and is not easily accessible unless you go hunting for it.
There is no option to remove your information from the service or have Google stop tracking the account, you can however manage your privacy settings and get a look at the data collected on your account in list form.
While this dashboard is a great first step the company will have to take additional steps such as allowing for removal of personal information and related data to please regulators and critics.
